I've got the 1970 Netherlands Gatefold edition, but can't add it to a new release
I would have to suggest that the image shown above is not a 1970 first Japanese release as I would suggest that the 1970 Japanese releases would have been a direct UK import with Japanese obi . I will stand corrected but would say that it is a Japanese first pressing most likely re issued around circa 1974 onwards judging by the the asteroid/multi star dark blue threshold label.
Sounds great, eh? This is what it's all aboot. Maple Leaf Moodys. Seriously, sounds pretty good. Take off, hosers!
Fantastic disc, amazing soundstage and separation, a demo disc for me.
Very very nice pressing. Excellent and detailed sound, any surface noise. Excellent artwork too
This is the First French edition ! (BIEM on the label)
I have not found a match for the labels or run outs.
Label Side A: SMAS 93329 XZAL-10009P K
Label Side B: SMAS 93329 XZAL-10010P K
Runout Side 1: XZAL-10009-B (SMAS-1- swrilled out) 93329-1 21111
Runout Side 2: XZAL-10010 (swril SMAS-2- swrilled out) 93329-1 211
I have a copy of QofB which I cannot find an exact match for.
It is THS 3 / XZAL.10009P / XZAL10010P. Disc and cover Made In England.
On the disc label, 'Side 1' or 'Side 2' is printed on the inner diameter, almost adjacent to the spindle hole.
Side 1 of the disc has 'BIEM GEMA NCB' over '1970' and Side 2 does not.
Does anybody recognise this or have I missed it somehow as there are so many variables?
Can someone comment on the sound quality and pressing quality?
A Question of Balance marked a change for the band, where they delivered an album much more akin to something that should have come at the beginning of their career. The album was stripped down, 'gone' was the sincere instrumentational lushness, hazy sense of well being, and hushed psychedelic atmosphere. 'In' was a mere shadow of what the Moody Blues had come to represent to so many, delivered with robust vocals, arrangements that were more edgy, and with an attitude that some corner had been turned, some door closed, where tracks such as "Melancholy Man" reflected a sense of giving up, a resolve that nothing would ever change or flower as suggested and strived for during their earlier works. Also missing was that cohesive them that held their music together in the past.
With that in mind, there are many reasons the band should have walked through that new door, the Viet Nam war was raging endlessly on, and being affected by it, Justin Hayward wrote the opening track "Question," which as the album title suggested, was countered by the final song "Balance," and suggesting an unheeded sense of urgency. Again, "Melancholy Man" imaged the band's feelings that they had not managed to change a thing, that the world was still falling into disarray, that fans were using their music as a soundtrack for their psychedelic lysergic meanderings, that there was no way in or out, that we were all on this speeding train with no one at the controls. Everything about this album inspired a sense of confusion, right down to the cover art that portrayed a world turned upside down on its axis, with no one to reach down and take the hand in order to save us from our own folly.
And that turns yet another page … for the most part people turn to drugs, music, and art as a means of escaping their lives and the things that they have no control over. We [the fans, the listeners] already knew how screwed up things were, we were living in the streets and on the battlefields, we didn't need to be reminded of the turmoil and degradation, all we wanted was to simply and lovingly, be soothed and nurtured. None of us wanted the stage lights to highlight the audience, we only wanted to be lost in the musical quietness of the darkness. Though I ask you, with the lives of so many of us on this endless treadmill, it was just wrong that the Moody Blues were raking in millions of dollars off our our despair, as they were truly sitting comfortably surrounded by their wealth and status. And that self-righteousness that brought down this album and the Moody Blues, as they'd been preaching to us for years now, and whether we followed their suggestions or not was up to us as listeners … but to assault us in this manner was unthinkable, and while many tried to ignore these sonic manifestations, over time, that simply became impossible, and the album was shelved.
Of course, if one was not around during those years, these verses may not bring to light their essence, and the songs may sound mysterious and enchanting, and to that end, if you are one of those, then please enjoy yourselves, as on other levels, A Question of Balance has much to offer.
